Introduction:Reticulate Python is a non-venomous python found in the Philippines, Indonesia and Southeast Asia. There are currently no recognized subspecies.General:These are among the longest snakes in the world and the adults can grow up to 9.75m in length. Although they do not pose any danger to human beings, larger specimens are strong enough to overcome a human being. They are also not heavily built. They have a complex color pattern that incorporates numerous different colors. This species has a wide variation of color, markings and size. Though its color may make it appear brash while in the zoo, it is a feature that enables these snakes blend well in the jungle environment since they merge with the debris and fallen leaves. This disruptive coloration gives these snakes an advantage when catching prey and protects them from any predators.Geographic range:Reticulate pythons are found in Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Burma, and Nicobar Islands in Southeast Asia. They are also found in Sumatra, Natuna Islands, Sulawesi, Lombok, Sumba, Flores, Maluku, Timor and other Indo-Australian areas. They are in several parts of Philippines such as Mindoro, Negros, Luzon and Basilan.Habitat:They flourish in woodland, grassland and rainforest areas and are also associated with areas near streams, lakes and rivers. They sometimes prey on an assortment of domestic animals.Behavior:Reticule Pythons are excellent swimmers and have been sighted swimming far into the sea. They have also colonized several islands within their range.Reproduction:Reticulate Pythons are oviparous and each clutch of eggs has 60 to 100 eggs which hatch in about 88 days. Their hatchlings are close to 61 cm in length.Captivity:They make good captives and pets though their keepers should be experienced in handling large constrictors to ensure both the keeper and animal’s safety. They are very interactive and stunning which draws a lot of attention to them. |
